The United Way of Pekin is deeply committed to supporting the mental well-being of our community. Prevalence of Mental Illness
In 2021, approximately 22.8% of U.S. adults experienced some form of mental illness, translating to about 57.8 million people. Mental illnesses are common, affecting tens of millions each year, yet only half receive treatment (National Institute of Mental Health) (Mental Health America).

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among people aged 10-14 and the third among those aged 15-24 (NAMI). Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S., with over 47,500 deaths in 2019 (National Institute of Mental Health).

People with depression have a 40% higher risk of developing cardiovascular and metabolic diseases compared to the general population. Those with serious mental illnesses are nearly twice as likely to develop these conditions (NAMI).

For children between 5-15 to have the opportunity for a safe learning and play environment to build skills and character. The program focuses on educational enhancement, career exploration, well-being, and fitness.
After school hours: Mon-Fri 12 to 5:30 PM Hours change on NO School or early dismissal days.

Support Groups
The Center for Prevention of Abuse offers a variety of support groups to meet the needs of our clients and our diverse departments. Support groups are an important piece to the healing process and give our clients the opportunity to share their story with others who have similar experiences.

Crisis Counseling
Crisis counseling, provided by licensed therapists, is available in Pekin and Eureka. Arrangements for 6 to 8 sessions are flexible and set at the family’s convenience. These services are free of charge for clients, and funded by grants and donations.

Safe Shelter Services
(Partner Program)
CFPA has teams of counselors and therapists ready to work with all victims of abuse, survivors of domestic violence, human trafficking, sexual assault, and sexual abuse, to help begin the healing process of recent and past trauma. Counseling and therapy are also available for the survivor’s significant other and family members.

Orders of Protection
(Partner Program)
An Order of Protection is a legal document, granted by a judge, to help protect a victim of violence, abuse, and harassment. Orders are drafted to meet and to protect the desires of the individual victim and are enforced by law enforcement and the courts.
CFPA staff are located at Peoria, Tazewell, and Woodford County courthouses to help victims with the process of seeking an Order of Protection.

Pet Peace Program
CFPA offers a pet care program for those in crisis care for up to two years.

Safety Planning
There are many elements involved with a creating a safety plan, including steps for what to do before you leave, when you leave, after you leave, as well as understanding how to take care of your emotional safety, and the safety of your friends and family.
Having a safety plan gives you the opportunity to play out different scenarios in your head and enables you to take control of your responses to dangerous situations as best you can.
