Access Is Key!

Recent advancements in technology and the expansion of healthcare services in the Greater Peoria area have greatly enhanced access to quality healthcare for local residents. The widespread adoption of telehealth services by providers such as OSF HealthCare and Heartland Health Services has revolutionized patient care, making it possible for individuals to receive medical consultations and follow-ups from the comfort of their homes. This technological leap has been particularly crucial during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring continuous and timely medical support while minimizing the need for in-person visits (Peoria Magazine) (Heartland Health Services).

In addition to technological improvements, the expansion of medical services and the continuous pursuit of excellence in healthcare have played a significant role in improving patient outcomes. For example, Carle Health in Pekin recently received Magnet Certification in the summer of 2024, a distinguished accolade that underscores the hospital's commitment to outstanding nursing and patient care (Home Healthcare Agency). This recognition highlights the high standards of clinical practice and the superior patient outcomes achieved by the dedicated healthcare professionals at Carle Health. These advancements and recognitions collectively enhance the community's access to high-quality healthcare, ensuring that residents receive the best possible medical support and treatment.

Prevalence and Barriers

Approximately 1 in 4 adults in the United States have a disability, highlighting the significant portion of the population affected by accessibility issues in healthcare. Individuals with disabilities often face substantial barriers to accessing healthcare, including physical, communication, and policy-related obstacles (CDC).

Healthcare Access Disparities

People with disabilities are less likely to receive preventive healthcare services, such as routine check-ups and screenings, compared to those without disabilities. This gap is particularly pronounced among younger and middle-aged adults with disabilities (Healthy People 2030) (Health.gov).

  • Meals On Wheels

Meals on Wheels delivers hot, nutritional meals to homebound seniors in Peoria and Tazewell counties. While this service fills a critical food security gap, it is much more than that. Because they are homebound, the clients we serve often suffer from isolation and the associated negative side effects. By making contact with them every day, our drivers form relationships with our clients and perform daily wellness checks.
